Harrisburg, PA -- When you hear the words “Credit Union”, serving the community isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind, and scholarships even less so. However, Belco Community Credit Union combines all of these things with its annual Elton “Miller” Peterman Scholarship Program.

The $1,000 scholarships are given to three graduating high schoolers and two to members to aid them with their continued education. Applications were available from their website, a service representative, or by calling (800)642-4482. The applicationhad to be submitted by the 1st of March for the 2018 program. To be qualified for a chance to receive a scholarship, the applicant had to be a member or employee of the credit union, a graduating high school or college student, and have a 2.5 cumulative GPA. A 300-to-500-word essay was also required, which asked questions about finances, the credit union and the community.

After the Belco Community Credit Union Scholarship Committee reviews all applications, the recipients of the scholarships will be notified by the end of March. The scholarships can be used to assist members of the community and Belco employees with school expenses, helping to relieve pressure on the burden education can bring on students and graduates alike. It also acts as a way to thank the community for all their business for the year, allowing Belco to give back and help the people in their community who havesupported the credit union.
