One of the most early tourist destinations in Washington DC was the Washington Monument. It's found on the National Mall in the west end of the Reflecting Pool and reverse. The Washington Monument in its straightforward sandstone, granite and marble design is a dramatic and highly identifiable homage to George Washington.

One of the fundamental ideas behind making a monument was the thought that gratitude and respect should be dramatically expressed for what he contributed in making a republic where all people are equivalent.

Most people understand that the Washington Monument is to honor George Washington as the United States first president. He was elected in a unanimous vote, and the principal Founding Father of this country, as George Washington was truly extraordinary in several methods, but his achievements do not stop there. The observations were many people of his time's view, although these may be GeorgeWashington words.

The end result would come many years after his passing, although during Washington's lifetime, there was much talk of how to honor him. The Washington National Monument Society started on what would have been the 100th birthday in Washington, fundraising. Afterwards, contests were held and design was selected. The initial design does differ in the design that is finished. In the initial design, the foot of the obelisk was containing statues of Revolutionary War heroes and colonnaded.

The Washington Monument's concluding design was patterned after the Egyptian obelisk. Construction commenced, but there were quite a few delays that in the end the monument was finished by the Army Corp of Engineers, and spanned several decades. The pyramidal point towards the very top is cast aluminum, which at that time was considered a rare metal and more pricey afterward silver. DC's first homage to a president's building fast became a popular site for visitors, and was finished in 1884.

Currently, the Washington Monument brings hundreds of thousands each year.

The Washington Monument continues to be the tallest stone structure on the planet, together with the biggest obelisk. In the DC area, it's the tallest structure in the notable height of 555 feet that are over, and can be viewed from miles away. Then remember to take time for the Washington Monument if you're in the DC area.
