Being a new driver, one of the most difficult things to handle is the number of hazards on the road. With more pedestrians, cyclist, vehicles and other distractions, you’ve to be very conscious as you drive. So, how to stay aware of those road hazards?
Concentrate on the road:
Apart from numerous hazards outside the vehicle, there also can be numerous distractions inside the vehicle but when you’re driving you’ve to concentrate all of your attention on the road. For beginners, it’s unlawful to use a cell phone or other gadgets while driving unless it’s to call the emergency helpline number.
Similarly, things like messing around with the heating system, car stereo or any other non-essential system can drive away your focus from the road. Set the car up prior to you leave & try to avoid messing with these things when driving. Never attempt to pick up anything you’ve dropped on the car floor when driving either.
Be calm & alert:
Hostility on the road is sadly a common part of modern society but it’s essential to stay away from aggression as much as possible, especially when driving. Don’t drive if you’re upset or angry about something.
The biggest cause of mishap can be people driving when feeling tired & losing their focus or even falling asleep at the wheel. If you’re exhausted, do not drive or if you’re on a long trip & feel yourself becoming exhausted, then find somewhere to stop & take a break.
Expect the unexpected:
While you might know what drivers are supposed to do in a specific circumstance, this does not always mean they actually will so it’s wise to drive defensively. This offers you time to respond to anything unforeseen or random that other drivers do prior to a mishap can happen.

Always try to leave a secure distance between yours & other vehicle. An easy technique to measure this is to choose a landmark & when the car in front passes it, count for 2 seconds & if pass it before this mark, then drop back a little. If the weather is unfavorable or you’re towing a caravan or trailer, then leave a bigger gap as the vehicle will require more room to stop.
No doubt the best way to be calm & confident in dealing with any road hazards is to have a qualified driving instructor.
