In the course of delivering over 6000 stabilized camera gimbals to various customers, Hood Tech staff have enjoyed had the opportunity to experience a range of GPS/IMU systems.

Amongst others, Hood Tech has employed the following GPS/IMU systems:

Several customer-developed, aircraft-specific GPS/IMU systems
Rockwell-Collins/Athena GuideStar, several models
UTC/CloudCap Piccolo
NovAtel, several models

According to Hood Tech’s Dr. Andy von Flotow, “An camera gimbal provides an excellent opportunity to evaluate the quality of a GPS/IMU system. The gimbal enables quantification of the errors of the vehicle state vector reported by the GPS/IMU system. We have observed these measured GPS/IMU errors to be not well-correlated with the published specifications of these GPS/IMU systems. Of necessity, we’ve developed methods to protect our gimbal-pointing logic from these errors.”

Hood Technology Corp. Vision, Inc. (Hood Tech) designs and builds imaging and video processing systems for manned and unmanned aerial vehicles, boats, land vehicles, and stationary mounts. The reliability and utility of Hood Tech’s daylight and thermal imaging products has been demonstrated over more than 800,000 hours of operations in a variety of temperatures, humidity, dust, smoke, haze, and other environmental factors (http://www.hoodtechvision.com).

Hood Technology was founded by Dr. Andy von Flotow in Hood River, Oregon in 1993. In addition to stabilized imaging systems, Hood Technology develops, tests, and builds launch and retrieval systems for a variety of UAVs and monitors turbomachinery blade motions in industrial turbines and jet engines, a diagnostic method for anticipating future failures (www.hoodtech.com).
