Losing your hair? Don’t worry, you are not alone! Hair loss is common in both – men and women. However, living with hair loss can be challenging, especially when it changes the way you look. Of course, if you are experiencing hair loss and thinning of hair due to a medical treatment such as chemotherapy or thyroid, then your hair is likely to grow back again after the treatment ends. But if hair loss runs in your family or you are experiencing hair thinning as a result of stress and other medical conditions, then your hair won’t grow back naturally.

If you are unhappy with baldness or thinning hair, then there are various treatments that will help you look and feel good. One such hair regeneration technique is known as PRP – Platelet Rich Plasma therapy offered at the Aspen Institute for Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy has been used in the field of orthopedic medicine for many years, but recently hair restoration surgeons have discovered the positive benefits of this regenerative medicine. PRP is a technique where the patient’s own blood cells are used to enhance hair growth naturally.

How does it work?

The Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Restoration process performed at the Aspen Institute for Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine is initiated using the patient’s own blood (approximately 60 cc). Once the patients’ blood is drawn, the blood is then placed into a centrifuge and spun separating the serum. Serum is derived from the separation of white and red blood cells, and platelet rich plasma. Dr. Gershon then gently administers a local anesthetic on the scalp to completely numb the area. A sedative can also be given to the patient if needed. The platelet rich plasma is administered via a series of injections on the specific areas of the scalp.

The patient’s response to the PRP varies from person to person and is also contingent on the natural healing capacity of the body. Most patients can witness improvement in their hair growth after about 2 – 3 months. The process is usually repeated every eight to twelve months.

Is PRP safe?

Yes, PRP is safe as the process uses a patient’s own blood (autologous) with a minimally invasive procedure. The treatment not only promotes hair growth, but also strengthens the existing hair follicles. The procedure might seem uncomfortable, but it is a safe technique with no side effects.

Who should not opt for PRP?

PRP treatment is showing great results in hair regeneration however, the treatment is not ideal for everyone. Those who have lost all hair cannot undergo the treatment as it does not help new hair grow on bald patches. The treatment only makes the existing thinning hair strong and thick by strengthening the hair follicles.
