Characteristics of different Drinking Water are meant to serve different demand on the market.

Jalan Ampang, KL: Take a look at a glass of water. It looks refreshing, hydrating and invaluable to your survival. Before you take a sip though, how do you know that the water you consume is free from disease-causing organisms? Did you know that only 1 out of 10 people can actually be sure that their water is clean and safe to drink? Most People are aware that water safety is incredibly important to the human body. The quality of the water you drink greatly impacts your overall health.

There are many types of water on the market which have their own characteristic, claims and marketing message. Unfortunately, there are also lots of false claims, deceptive sales pitches, inaccurate water quality data, and scare tactics used by some water treatment companies to sell expensive types of water for your home and office.

Therefore, what type of water should we consume?

1. TAP WATER
You need to stay hydrated — that’s clear — but is the tap water in your home safe?

When your drinking water leaves a treatment plant on its way to your house, it must meet strict safety standards. That doesn’t mean that your water is free of all contaminants, but that the levels of any contaminants don’t pose any serious health risk. However, what causes the risk is the delivery system where your tap water can become contaminated as a result of breaks in the water line. One of the biggest problems is lead getting into the water from pipes. Even” lead-free” pipes can contain as much as 8% lead which is not possible to remove by boiling.

Tap water is good to use for household cleaning but is not suggested for consuming unless you test the water quality regularly.

2. FILTERED WATER
In an effort to make their drinking water safer, some people use water filters at home. There are four main kinds:

Activated carbon filters can remove certain organic contaminants that affect taste and odor. Some systems are also designed to remove chlorination byproducts, solvents, and pesticides, or certain metals such as copper or lead.
Ion exchange units with activated alumina can remove minerals such as calcium and magnesium, which make water hard. This is often used in combination with another filtration method, such as carbon absorption or reverse osmosis.
No one system will remove all water contaminants. If you do decide you want to install a system, you should have your water tested by a certified laboratory first to find out what’s in your water.

No matter which water filtering system you choose, you need to maintain it; otherwise, contaminants build up in the filter and make the water quality worse than it would be without the filter. In addition, the used filters need to recycled otherwise you will contribute to the environmental contamination.

3. SPRING WATER
Raw spring water is unfiltered, unprocessed, or untreated water that is bottled directly from a natural spring.

Some manufacturers are selling this water and marketing it as a safer alternative to treated water, maintaining that their water has natural probiotics that help promote digestion and good health. However, scientists and government officials have expressed concerns over untreated water. Raw water may be an instance where “natural” is not necessarily better. It may also be true that raw water does not offer distinct health benefits over a healthful diet that includes drinking tap or bottled water.

Let’s state the obvious here: Water treatment removes bacteria, parasites, pesticides, and other contaminants, and drinking untreated spring water can come with risks.

4. MINERAL WATER
Mineral water comes from underground reservoirs. Unlike regular drinking water, mineral water does not undergo chemical processing.

As water travels through the many layers of earth, sand and rock, the water dissolves minerals, such as iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium, from these layers. This is one of the reasons that some choose to drink spring water but it could also be a reason not to, as harmful minerals, such as mercury and lead, can also be dissolved.

Other spring water seekers insist that, because spring water is stored deep within the earth, it is protected from contaminants, such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals and other chemicals that tap water can come in contact with. However, just because water comes from underground, doesn’t mean that it has come from deep underground or that it’s clean and safe to drink.

One of the main downsides to mineral water is cost and in addition many of the minerals from this type of water can also be obtained from a healthy, varied diet.

5. ALKALINE WATER
Alkaline water is somewhat controversial. Many health professionals say there isn’t enough research to support the many health claims made by users and sellers. Differences in research findings may be related to the types of alkaline water studies. Although alkaline drinking water is considered safe, it may produce negative side effects.

Some examples of negative side effects include the lowering of natural stomach acidity, which helps kill bacteria and expel other undesirable pathogens from entering your bloodstream.

Additionally, an overall excess of alkalinity in the body may cause gastrointestinal issues and skin irritations. Too much alkalinity may also agitate the body’s normal pH, leading to metabolic alkaloids, a condition that may produce nausea, vomiting, hand tremors, muscle twitching, tingling in the extremities or face or confusion. Alkaloids can also cause a decrease in free calcium in the body, which can affect bone health. However, the most common cause of hypoglycemia isn’t from drinking alkaline water, but from having an under active parathyroid gland.

6. SPARKLING WATER
Carbonated water is water that has been infused with carbon dioxide gas under pressure. This produces a bubbly drink that’s also known as sparkling water, club soda, soda water, seltzer water, and fizzy water.

By now, everyone is well aware of the hazards of drinking soda, both sugary and sugar-free. But what about their less showy cousins: seltzer water, sparkling water and soda water?

While there are some minerals present in sparkling water, there aren’t enough to be truly beneficial to your health in a meaningful way. In addition, it can be expensive compared to both tap and certain types of bottled water.

Apart from seltzer water, carbonated waters usually have salt added to improve their taste. Sometimes small amounts of other minerals are included.
