What are the Strong Magnets?

You may be wondering why strong magnets are not always used for every kind of application. Even though these magnets are incredibly strong, they are not always best for each type of application.

Although magnet is a very common word, the term “strong magnet” may be unfamiliar to most people. There are a few different industrial applications that an alnico magnet would be strong enough for and ceramic magnets are the most versatile and cost-effective, in addition to being strong. However, do alnico and ceramic magnets constitute as strong magnets?

Most likely, if you hear “strong magnet,” the term is referring to the strongest permanent magnet found anywhere in the world, which is a rare earth magnet. Rare earth magnets are strong permanent magnets that are made from alloys of rare earth elements and they are the strongest type of permanent magnets that are made. They are significantly stronger than both alnico and ceramic magnets. Rare earth magnets can be sold in a variety of different sizes and grades and come in ring, disc or block form.

You may be wondering why strong magnets are not always used for every kind of application. Even though these magnets are incredibly strong, they are not always best for each type of application.

Neodymium magnets are the most common type of strong magnet, but they need to have a very high magnetizing field and a protective coating when used for certain applications. Also, neodymium magnets have temperature constraints and these magnets need to be used with extreme caution since they have such an incredible magnetic force.

In addition to the strong neodymium magnet, the other commonly sold rare earth magnet is samarium cobalt. Neodymium magnets are more commonly used. Theses magnets are small, have a high energy and have an incredibly high resistance to demagnetization.
Strong magnets can be used for a variety of purposes, including for these applications:

• Closure devices
• DC and servo motors
• High performance motors
• Holding devices
• Linear actuators
• Magnetic separators
• Microphone assemblies
• Sensors
• Speakers
