ORG CHEM Group has announced that it will supply the initial fill for a new bio-refinery project in Finland. UPM is building the bio-refinery at its Kaukas mill site in Lappeenranta, Finland, with an investment of €150m ($200m). The site is located about 220km from Helsinki in southeastern Finland. The facility will become the first refinery in the world to produce second-generation wood-based biodiesel on a large scale when it is commissioned in 2014. The facility will be capable of producing 100,000t of renewable diesel fuel annually. The refinery is being constructed to meet the increasing demand for bio-fuels to replace fossil fuels in the market. Bio-fuels like these will help the European Union meet its target of lowering gas emissions by 20% by using bio-fuels as an alternative to fossil fuels in cars by 2020.
