Transformers are an important part in the supply and acquiring of electricity in our homes. They regulate the amount of electric voltage that appliances and machines use thus enabling them to function without acting up or getting damaged. Some devices and appliances actually come with their own transformers and you do not have to install them yourself but some don’t.
How Transformers Work
Transformers work through electromagnetic induction to change the original voltage or the input voltage by either increasing or decreasing it and providing an output voltage that is safe to use in areas where machines, equipment and appliances only need low voltage. Transformers exist in different shapes and sizes because they are used for different purposes.
Types of Transformers
Power transformer: it is the transformer used to transform or adjust electrical voltage from the power plant to local circuits. Power plants supply electricity with very high volts of between 765000 to 15500 and power transformers transform these volts to 7200.
Distribution transformer: they are the transformers found within or around residential areas and which supply electricity to residential users. These transformers adjust the 7200 electrical volts to between 220 to 240 volts that is needed for appliances in residential places.
Autotransformer: these are available in small sizes and they use a single coil of wire. They are also cheap and mainly function as a step down or a step up transformer.
Isolation transformer: these do not work like the common transformer because it has equal ratio of coils on both sides of the core. The regular transformer usually has more number of coils on either the primary winding coil or the secondary winding coil. It is used as a safety device.
Current Transformer: it is mainly used to measure the current and to separate it from the primary winding coil. It is used to for safety as it monitors and controls the current to ensure the circuit environment is stable.
Where Transformers are used
The SQUARE D TRANSFORMER is used domestically to boost the level of volts, to overcome power fluctuations which may cause damage to appliances; they can also be used to charge phones, cameras and laptops among others.
In handling transformers one needs to be careful and take into consideration a number of precautions and safety tips. Some of these are;
1. Handle your transformer with dry hands and do not place them in wet areas. Keep your transformer clear of water.
2. Turn off power sources to the transformer before you touch it to avoid getting shocked.
3. Ensure that your transformer is grounded to fend off static charges which will otherwise accumulate. This will also help the windings not to come into contact and interfere with the core.
4. Do not adjust the conductors or circuits in your transformer because this will fault its correct functioning.
5. Keep small objects like nuts, nails, bolts and chips away from the transformer so that they don’t fall inside the transformer.
6. Remember to make caution signs that will help people to keep off of the transformer.
