Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II no longer lives under a rock that’s been sitting in the backroom of used game stores that traffic in dusty original Xbox DVDs or forlorn Windows discs nestled inside physical boxes the size of library books. More than a decade after its release in December 2004, developer Obsidian’s science-fantasy roleplaying opus has finally been resuscitated on Mac, PC and Linux by port-monger Aspyr, and the forward path includes a few things I thought we’d never see.

Like: 37 gameplay achievements, Steam Cloud saves, widescreen, up to 5K resolution support, and the option to use gamepads (PlayStation 3 or 4 and Xbox 360 or One). There’s also Steam Workshop support—the ability to make and use mods. Want invisible headgear? Weapons hidden during cutscenes? The famed mod that professes to restore the features that Obsidian cut from the original?

Some fans would say that Knights of the Old Republic II is the best-told Star Wars tale to date. Sure, even the best Star Wars games are still a galaxy far, far away from the yarn-spinning chops of a Gene Wolfe or Neal Stephenson. But still, rejoice that we can all finally revisit a Star Wars game that’s not ye annual rote shooter, or that has you doing laps in a merchandising-chummy pod racer, or shark-jumpingly wrenching Star Destroyers out of orbit with your mind.

Why now, after years of Bioware’s original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic receiving all the forward-compatible love? Our Star Wars year, of course. It’s the cynical view, but probably the right one: it took the cachet of a new Star Wars flick to finally get Knights of the Old Republic II its way-overdue physical.

The one thing that’d be better still? A twofer repackaging of both games on the new consoles, as a hedge against fears that EA’s Star Wars Battlefront reboot and the Star Wars-focused Disney Infinity 3.0 are going to be business as usual.

Today in completely-unexpected-yet-welcome news: Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords, first released in 2004, got an official update, replete with fixes and new features.

The update, which covers Mac, Linux and Windows versions of the game purchased through Steam, introduces a number of significant features, including widescreen resolutions of up to 4K and 5K, 37 in-game achievements, controller support and Steam Workshop integration.

That last item is particularly noteworthy, as it allows anyone to access and install user-created add-ons for the game inside the Steam client. One of the items already available is KotOR II’s popular “Restored Content Mod,” which fixes an assortment of bugs and introduces story content that was built for but not included in the original game.

As the story goes, developer Obsidian Entertainment was working under the gun during the final months of the game’s development. That’s why the day one release was littered with bugs. Years later, code-savvy fans discovered cut content inside the game’s code; that’s when the community effort to create the Restored Content Mod was born.

The new Steam update comes from Aspyr, a studio with a long history of porting games from other developers to new platforms. According to the official patch notes, Aspyr built the update “in partnership” with Disney Interactive and LucasArts — though the latter studio now exists only as a brand that Disney owns.
