ALA and Burning Mouth Syndrome

According to a recent double-blind study, ALA supplements may prove to be beneficial in easing the symptoms of burning-mouth syndrome.

Alpha lipoic acid occurs naturally in the human body, and plays a major role in the production of energy. The compound functions as a fat and water soluble antioxidant to defend the cells against damages while improving your body’s ability to put insulin to use. According to a recent double-blind study, ALA supplements may prove to be beneficial in easing the symptoms of burning-mouth syndrome. BMS is a chronic oral pain that causes one’s lips, tongue, and palate to feel as though it had just been scorched with liquid. It tends to occur in women following menopause, and may be neuropathic.

The Study and Implication

The study contained 18 men and 42 women between 22 and 68 years. They were given three 200 mg doses of ALA supplements daily, or a placebo, for two months. 87% of the patients that were taking the supplements experienced partial or complete improvement during the course of the study. 40% of those taking placebos experienced significant improvement, while none were cured of symptoms. The following year, the researchers did a follow up with the patients. 73% of the patients that improved with ALA were able to maintain the improvement. The patients who had improved with placebos experienced health deterioration over the following year.

The patients experienced a significant amount of improvement, which implies that the burning mouth syndrome is neuropathic in some form, and may be caused by free radical damage. Those who are undergoing menopause may be able to benefit from consuming alpha lipoic acid supplements on a regular basis to prevent the deterioration of their cognitive faculties.

ALA offers many other benefits as well by supporting your body’s ability to metabolize glucose and build healthy neural tissues. The antioxidants in your body receive a great deal of support from the acids.
