High intensity sweeteners (HIS) are key ingredients that are used to sweeten and enhance the flavour of food. They are many times sweeter than sugar and are comparatively of low calories compared to sugar. FDA regulates it as food additives. These high intensity sweeteners generally marketed as “sugar free” and finds its usage in various food and beverages product.

As of 2017, six high intensity sweeteners are FDA approved in U.S. – namely aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, acesulfam potassium and advantame. These are primarily artificial sweeteners. In recent years, natural high intensity sweeteners market demand has increased manifold compared to artificial sweeteners. Natural sweeteners are generally recognized as safe. As such the demand for stevia extracts has increased in last six years.

As per the estimates, artificial high intensity sweeteners market share was 77.4% in 2016. Furthermore, it accounted for 8% of global sweetener market in 2016. There are various high intensity sweeteners available in the market.

Cyclamate dominates the high intensity sweeteners market throughout the forecast period. It is highly used in China and other Asia Pacific regions. As per the estimates, cyclamate accounted for 33% of total HIS consumption in China. However, demand has substantially arisen for sucralose.

Artificial high intensity sweeteners market size was valued at US$ 1,447.6 million in 2016 and will grow by 1.4 times to reach US$ 1,974.7m by 2027. Globally, artificial, sweetener will register stable growth from 2.8% to 3.1%. Upward trajectory growth even amid declining demand is attributed to the fact that artificial HIS is still very popular in developing regions. Cyclomate, aspartame and sucralose are consumed in large quantity in China and India – two leading nation in Asia Pacific. Also, sucralose growth will offer momentum to overall market.

Natural high intensity sweeteners market size accounted for nearly 22.6% market share of total HIS market in 2016.
