A wheelchair accessible vehicle or “Adapted Automobiles” can no more be considered a luxury. A study shows that there are over 650 million disable people in this world. Disability is still considered a major taboo and disabled people all around the globe still fight for equality and social acceptance.

Outcries for "Rights and not Charity” have clogged our social ears for decades, but to face the harsh reality one has to understand the multi problems that a disable person has to face daily. Self-respect comes largely from social acceptance and for a disable person, the limitations he/she has to face daily and the way he/she has to depend on other people for the daily needs is a cause for frustration and humiliation.

Owning a wheelchair ensures mobility for a disabled person, but that is restricted within the four walls of a household. However, daily work includes going outside too. A wheelchair accessible vehicle makes room to fit in the wheelchair and it can set either as a passenger or a driver.

What Is an Adapted Automobile?

An “Adapted van” is a kind of vehicle that has been modified to fit in a wheelchair. The cost and kind of modification obviously depends on the manufacturer and the specific model. But some general modifications are standard to every model. These modifications are:

• The seats are also designed in a way that they can allow access via a wheelchair.
• There is also an added external access of wheelchairs in the automobile.
• There are installed tie-downs for the wheelchair too.
• The floor of the WAV is usually very strong and sturdy.

Dealer

Finding a dealer who could modify the vehicle according to the specified need of the individual is of utmost importance. A right dealer would have all the right equipment and will also understand the need of the person and his or her family.

Specialist Touch

Just like any vehicle, an adapted vehicle also has a lot many technicalities (if not more). Hence maneuvering such a vehicle needs training from a specialist; mere installing new devices and making modifications to the automobile is not enough.

A Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) helps in analyzing and listing the modifications required for every individual case and also helps the disabled person learn how to use them. If the person wishes to drive, then the training could be longer.

A wheelchair accessible vehicle is a boon in every sense – to the disabled person and also his or her family. Several rights of a disabled person includes the Right to Equality and to ensure most of those rights, we need to make sure that they are provided with opportunities to overcome the unfortunate limitation.

Society needs to open up to the psychological needs of a disabled person, not out of pity or sympathy but because it is our moral duty. Owning a vehicle is a necessity and being able to accommodate a wheelchair inside one opens several possibilities.
