The Little Rochdale Girl Makes It Big In Alpine Skiing

A chance participation in a radio competition can change a life forever! Nothing can be truer than this to Daisi Daniels, who is likely to be one of the biggest names in the UK alpine racing world.

Daniels, who is now fifteen, started it all at the tender age of four. Fiona, her mother, recalls the day when she was listening to a particular radio station when an advertisement for a competition cropped up. It offered a lift pass to the well reputed Chill Factore Ski center. She somehow won the competition and the Daniels went for a holiday. Fiona and her husband, who were still on their learning phase, did not like it. Even Daisi, whose name was put in the lift pass, was reluctant in the beginning. Nevertheless, within a few days the very young Daisi impressed one of the instructors. He convinced the couple to prepare her for participating in the races.

There has been no looking back for the talented skier since then. Coming from Whitworth, the teenager has been travelling across the length and breadth of Europe, even in Canada and the USA, participating in numerous tournaments and winning a majority of them. The ace GB Olympiad David Ryding has called her as one of the most gifted young skiers right at the time. The ski racer has also become a favourite of another Olympiad, Louisa Alcott.

Fiona remains a constant source of strength and inspiration to Daniels. She maintains that it does not worry her at all to see how speedily she zooms through the hardest of terrains and the steepest of the slopes with such amazing speed. The Daniels’ seldom fail accompanying Daisi when she is training outdoors.

Seeing Daisi’s consistency and commitment, Team Evolution, a premier GB ski training institution, has invited her to join their program. Fiona takes pride in saying that the academy reserves such courses for the most gifted sportspersons only. Daisi gets the opportunity to join a two week course. There she would be trained to develop her skiing skills in the morning, and would be trained to build up her strength in the afternoon. The training center is located at Hintertux in Austria. It opens during the winter months.

Daniels was at her best in the last skiing season where she and her team won in all categories at the U-14s British Alpine Championships. Not only that, she could secure a place in the podium in the u-14 Super G, Slalom, Giant Slalom and even in the Combined British Champion. However, Daisi maintains that her selection to represent Great Britain for the 5th time in a row remains the most inspiring moment for her.

2017 has been a lucky year for this ski racer because the pocket size powerhouse has bagged a large number of awards. She was a competitor in the Aiglon College Cup and the Inter-schools Ski Challenge in March this year. Next, in April, she took part in the Delancey British Alpine Championships where she secured the third position, then the Aiglon College Cup U16 Slalom where she received the first position. Daisi also participated in the Inter-Schools Ski Challenge U16 Slalom, Inter-Schools Ski Challenge U16 Giant Slalom, Aiglon College Cup U16 Giant Slalom as well as in the Inter-Schools Ski Challenge U16 Slalom. She was awarded an overall first position in the Delancey British Alpine Championships U16 category. Daniels secured either a first or second position in the Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super G tournaments.

The young skier has been honoured with the prestigious British Lady’s Ski Club Award 2017.

Talking about her ultimate goal, Daisi mentions that she wants to make it to the Olympics. She is rigorously training herself with the B.S.A training academy in the Aosta valley, as well as in Chill Factore and Team Evolution. While a number of academies have opened their heart and wallets to Daisi to realize her dream, she still needs more sponsorship to participate in more competitions, as well as to travel. She welcomes sponsorships I n any form. Anyone can reach Daisi through her website, where she personally corresponds to her patrons.
