Cleanliness is next to Godliness. The human body is a temple of health. Taking care of one’s health includes healthy eating and clean living. Using beauty product has been stereotyped as putting on make-up. This is due to the tunnel vision of our society. Using beauty products, especially if they are organic, keeps your skin healthy and young. This is why; many companies are working on producing newer and more effective products, for the people. Before looking up on what to buy, one must understand the benefits of natural products. Organic products are first of all eco-friendly. They have less synthesized chemical compounds. Secondly, they cause lesser side-effects. Lastly, instead of working as an overnight miracle, they have slow long-lasting results. One such important product is shea butter.

Shea is an African tree. The products manufactured from various parts of the tree are beneficial to everyone. Shea butter is manufactured from the oil we get from shea seeds. The use of this butter is vast, since it’s edible. Occasionally it is used as a substitute for cocoa butter in chocolates. But presently, it is an important ingredient for making moisturizers and lotions. If one looks up the soap and ointment one uses, one will see that shea butter is listed among the ingredients. From where do we get quality shea butter?

Being a tree native to Africa, most African cosmetic companies provide high quality shea butter. The African Fair Trade Society or AFTS provide high quality, affordable shea butter products. With headquarters located in Vancouver, the AFTS imports shea butter from all over the globe. Notable countries are Ghana, Morocco and Senegal. The shea butter is produced in an environmentally friendly manner. Then products like soap, lotion and shampoos are produced using this butter. Many products are then marketed throughout British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Their main mode of marketing is via the internet and trade shows. Some are also marketed through local community programs.

Profits from the products are used for the development of many impoverished African communities. The aid is provided to villages based on their needs. Most of their resources are invested in health and education. Dakateli, one of the locations in Senegal, provide the maximum amount of shea butter to AFTS. The company is trying to provide the village with as much help as possible. They are working on providing every child with education. This includes providing the families with all the necessary materials for education, like books, stationary and uniform. Malaria is a serious problem in this village and a significant amount of the fund is being used to provide medicine for malaria. AFTS has also built Health clinics for the village.

AFTS doesn’t test their products on animals. Artificially produced chemicals and nutrients are not used. Most ingredients are natural extracts and contain natural preservatives. There are products like the Argan and Avocado oil Shea butter which contain argan oil and avocado oil. These shea butters, with vitamins and minerals added through plant extracts, can be bought for approximately $13. There are also soaps, both scented and unscented, which cost around $6.
